Earlier this year, the American Psychological Association (APA) released its annual Trends Report, highlighting 10 emerging trends in psychological science.

According to the APA, “This is a pivotal moment, nationally and globally, marked by significant shifts in the political landscape and societal priorities. With a new U.S. administration taking the helm, notable changes and developments are poised to influence the field of psychology in profound ways, presenting challenges and opportunities for all psychologists.

This will also be a year of profound change in other areas, as artificial intelligence (AI) continues to become a more integral part of therapy, research, the workplace, educational settings, and people’s lives. This shift underscores the importance of psychological leadership in addressing the technological and social issues that will arise, all while ensuring that human values lead the way. Psychology will also persevere on the most pressing societal issues, from mental health disparities to the promotion of equity and inclusion. Psychologists are uniquely positioned to contribute to these efforts, leveraging expertise to develop strategies and advocate for policies that support mental well-being and social justice.”

The 10 emerging trends are:

  • Artificial intelligence is impacting the field
  • Sustaining EDI efforts in a challenging new normal
  • Psychologists are seeking to modernize the profession
  • Psychology takes a global view
  • Work is reaching a boiling point
  • Technology is reshaping practice to expand psychology’s reach
  • Classrooms are adapting to the use of artificial intelligence
  • Psychology’s advocates are fighting for accessible care
  • Psychology is facing down the college enrollment crisis
  • Psychedelic treatment and mental health: Navigating a longer trip with optimism
